Snowsnap is a photography book by Noris Cocci on San Martino di Castrozza: one hundred pages, 210 by 310 millimetres, published in 2023. I did the graphic design and the layout. In the opening note the author writes that the book picks up the thread of the journey begun with Sicilian Element.
The white
Here the page stays almost always white. The photographs rest on it in different formats: one takes the whole sheet, the next is eight centimetres wide and sits alone in the empty space, and between the two pass pages with nothing on them. The numbers run along the inner margin, rotated, with the slash: 16 / 17.
The halftone
Some views are printed with a coarse halftone, the dots can be counted with the naked eye. On the snow the halftone eats the midtones and the mountain comes back like an engraving, among photographs that instead stay in full focus.
In the middle of the book is the only long text: four columns across a double page, resting on a very pale watermark. It tells of the Pale di San Martino, the peaks one by one, the Altopiano at 2,700 metres and the Busa di Manna, where in 2013 they measured fifty degrees below zero.
One hundred pages, 210 by 310 millimetres. Printed in Italy in 2023, ISBN 9788890697241. On the back cover the mark of San Martino di Castrozza — Primiero Dolomiti; at the end the author's biography, in Italian and English.
