Ventuno (“Twenty-one”) is a photography book by Noris Cocci: one hundred and twenty pages, 170 by 240 millimetres. I did the graphic design and the layout. The photographs are a year of shots and the book keeps them lined up by month: on each double page there is a big pink number, from 01 to 12, and at the end a glossary spells them out in full.
The pink
Besides black there is only one colour, a fluorescent pink. It takes the whole cover, then disappears for half the book and returns in the central section, where the photographs become black-on-pink duotones and the month number grows in size.
The excerpts
On the pink pages there are texts, all set in capitals: readings of the year, one per month, with the source in small type, vertical on the outer margin — Giovanni Stanghellini, Michela Mazzali, Andrea Bajani.
The same photograph can come back twice. The Madonna covered in rosaries is on pages 64—65 in duotone, inside the text, and reappears on 96—97 in colour and alone. The month is the same, 10.
At the end is the glossary: all the photographs in miniature, hung on a line that runs from January to December, each with the number of the page where it is. It serves to find a shot again without leafing through.
One hundred and twenty pages, 170 by 240 millimetres, a single colour besides black. At the end the author's biography, in Italian and English.
